As a therapist in Modesto providing compassionate care for clients is important. A benefit for privately paying for your care is autonomy over your care. Secondly, the added confidentiality (a third party such as an insurance provider does not have access to your personal information). Thirdly, we work together to assess the length (or the number of sessions) of our work together according to your specific needs. Lastly, if you do not meet the criteria insurance providers place for a diagnosis, it will not impact your ability to continue to receive the care you need and want. When using your insurance, you are responsible for verifying and understanding the limits of your insurance coverage. There is no guarantee whether your insurance will provide payment for the services provided to you. Therapy in Modesto is an investment that can be beneficial in so many ways. It can benefit your mental health, physical health, relationships, and how you view and interact in your world. Let me help you move out of surviving and into thriving.

As a therapist in Modesto, I have chosen not to work with insurance in my practice. I am not an in network provider. Instead the focus for Therapy in Modesto is to create a practice that is sustainable and allows me to be present to support my community in a compassionate way.
Let me share why I do not accept insurance. Not accepting insurance allows each client to have full autonomy in their care. This also allows us to develop a care plan tailored to your needs.
Often, when working with insurance, they may need to approve the services and reimburse for only certain types of approaches and number of sessions, and cover only certain diagnoses, as must meet medical necessity. Please keep in mind that therapy coverage by your insurance is not guaranteed.
You may also need to consider that when working within your insurance, this may limit the therapist you work with. This may hinder you from being able to work with someone you really connect with or who has a specialty you are interested in. There are limitations to the number of sessions, and one must also meet the criteria for a covered diagnosis.
Oftentimes, when the diagnosis is in remission, the services may no longer be covered, thus disrupting the ongoing long-term consistent care for a client.
Furthermore, often, insurance companies do not reimburse therapists a sustainable wage. Insurance often adds barriers for a therapist in working with clients in preventative care or personal development in a non-pathological approach.
Other times, the care needed may not be covered by the insurance provider. Insurance companies can also request information such as treatment dates, diagnosis, and even your complete record. A diagnosis is required and becomes part of your medical history and can impact a person later on (e.g., background checks, employment). For this reason, many people choose not to utilize their insurance. Please note that this also applies if you utilize a superbill.
Inform your therapist during your consultation if you plan to submit for out-of-network provider reimbursement. Your therapist will then provide you with a monthly super bill. Insurance providers can/do request documentation to determine if the services provided meet the medical necessity criteria as established by the insurance carrier. You will pay for services at the time they are provided, and your insurance carrier will reimburse you directly for the portion of the cost that is covered by your insurance provider.
I believe one reason therapy is so powerful is that it is a truly private experience.

As a therapist, I understand that therapy is an investment, and affordability matters. If my fee isn’t within your budget or you need to use insurance - I’m happy to discuss options, provide referrals, or help you explore resources that fit your needs. You deserve support, and we’ll find a way forward together.
If you need to use your insurance, the following are some resources: Inclusive Therapist, Latinx Therapy, and Therapy Den. You can also check in with your insurance to inquire about providers.
You can inquire with Open Path Collective, a directory with therapists who offer sliding scale fees.
If you are a student, you may be able to receive therapy through your school.
Research nonprofits and agencies in your area. These places may offer lower fees or free services.
-
Please note when working with a couple the Couple is the client and not one specific individual. Therefore, when working with the couple, there is no identified patient, which is required by insurance companies when inquiring with them for reimbursement.

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.
You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider (myself), and/or any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call The No Surprises Help Desk at 1-800-985-3059.
