Answers to FAQs for Counseling in Modesto CA

What does LMFT stand for?

  • LMFT Stands for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Often times you will hear the word therapist, counselor, or psychotherapist be used. This person holds a Master’s Degree and has completed the necessary educational training, complete 3000 clinical hours in order to become licensed in that state, in this case California. In the state of California, therapists are governed by the Board of Behavioral Sciences to ensure ethical standards and best practices are being used.

What areas do Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist focus on?

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) may work with children, teen, young adults, adults, couples and families of all different makeups.  However, many therapists have specific populations that they focus on working with. As a therapist in Modesto CA, I work with Individuals ages 18 or older and couples where parties are 18 or older. My current areas of focus are anxiety, self-compassion, and couples counseling.

What is the length of a Therapy session?

  • The length of Therapy sessions can range from 30 minutes to longer. Traditionally therapy sessions are 50 minutes. In my Modesto CA practice, I complete an assessment session, which is 60 minutes in length, with every client. Ongoing therapy sessions are 45 or 60 minutes in length minutes.

How often will I attend a Therapy Session?

  • Doing healing work at the level that will sustain long-term change takes time. It’s a commitment. Most people wait to begin therapy and come in after they have been experiencing difficulties for some time. For that reason, we must create time to explore and build a foundation that allows you to move towards your ideal goals and intentions.

  • In my practice, we meet on a weekly basis, usually on the same day and time. From tracking client outcomes, I have figured out that weekly sessions work best for my client's unique needs. My clients find weekly appointments allow for more accountability and the ability to reflect on stuck points, growth, and progress. Weekly appointments provide an opportunity to practice, implement, and maintain growth long-term, as there are more opportunities to implement changes and obtain support in fine-tuning as needed.

What if I need more time in my Therapy Session?

  • Every client has specific needs, and while weekly sessions work great for some clients, for others, the additional support and safe space can be wonderful. In my practice, scheduling needs are addressed and discussed as part of every client’s care plan. For some clients, this may be double sessions or two sessions weekly.

What is your availability for Therapy Sessions?

  • “Are there times or days that work best for me?” Ask yourself what schedule is best to help you stay committed and consistent. In our work together, you won’t have to worry about scheduling a therapy appointment weekly because rather than having to change your schedule on a weekly basis, we have a dedicated standing appointment time and day for our ongoing work. This will allow you to plan and make arrangements as needed with the other parts of your life (e.g., school, work, family, friends, etc.).

  • If you have an ideal time in mind and it happens to be occupied, I suggest you start sessions with a less ideal time to begin your work until your ideal time is available. New time slots are offered to current clients and then to new clients. Currently, appointments are offered from Tuesdays through Fridays in the morning and afternoon.

How do you prefer to attend Therapy sessions? In-Person or Telehealth?

  • You may have a preference on how to participate in therapy: In-person, telehealth, or a combination of both. During Covid, telehealth became vital in the continuing care of clients.

  • I offer both in-person therapy sessions and telehealth video therapy sessions through a secure HIPPA-compliant platform. Some clients use one or the other, while most utilize both methods. For telehealth therapy sessions, I ask that you be in a quiet, private, and confidential setting. If you care for children, make sure arrangements are made for their care. This will allow you to focus during the session as this is your time.
